rice has been caught up in this drama over the benghazi conflict and the deaths of americans in the assault on the u.s. consulate there. while susan rice was not responsible for security of the consulate, she did go on sunday shows and talk about the u.s. response there and she has been accused of deliberately mischaracterizing what happened. all sides -- or the white house has adamantly insisted and she has insisted that she in no way deliberately mischaracterized what happened. she was reading from unclassified talking points and nonetheless this has been caught up in a back and forth and, wolf, if i may, i'm going to read from part of her statement, her letter to the president and what she wrote in part, i am now convinced that the confirmation process will be lengthy, disruptive, and costly to you and to our most pressing national and international priorities. that tradeoff is simply not worth it to our country. the secretary of state may never be politicized. she says, i look forward to building on progress in your second term which seems to leave the door open to the po

th's deadly attack in benghazi, libya. john kerry leads the look into what went wrong. we'll have the latest in just minutes. good morning from a very busy washington. it's thursday, december 20th, 2012. this is "the daily rundown," the second shortest day of the year. let's get right to my first read. if talks on the fiscal cliff are going to be rescued, they have got to be rescued today. but the more you see the president and speaker boehner talking in public, the less they are talking behind the scenes. leaving negotiations stalled just 12 days before the new year. the speaker is now spending his third day working to pass a bill that will not become law. maybe it will start a framework for a backup plan but it's not going to be a law. and it won't probably be part of any final budget deal. the house will vote today on boehner's plan b which democratic leader harry reid had said will go nowhere in the senate. and the president has promised to veto it if it somehow got to him. in a 52-second, well it was a press conference but he didn't take questions so we'll call it a media ava

said on several sunday morning tv shows about benghazi, the attack in libya that ended up costing the lives of four americans. but by the time that whole thing played out, it was pretty clear that she was reading talking points that were put together by the intelligence community. she had very little, if nothing to do with embassy security itself. she happened to be on those shows themselves because secretary clinton had just come back from a trip and said she was too tired to go on them. there was more under way here though. part of it was a little bit of her style, which was very confrontational one and that probably didn't serve her all that well when she went up to capitol hill a few weeks ago and tried to talk this out between senator john mccain, lindsey graham, others who had opposed her. little bit of it was the white house i think after president obama came out very strongly in her support. she was afterall one of the first people to sign on to his foreign policy team when he was a pretyim probable candidate. after that, the white house did not come out in sort of a full-

got a bunch of questions over the benghazi terror attacks. what do we expect to hear from secretary clinton. joining us is k.t. mcfarland, one takes her at her word when she and spokesperson says she is ill. she has certainly managed to dodge a lot of this event since september 11th. >> yeah, she said she would take full responsibility but she has avoided taking any blame. one thing i think with the hearings, this will probably be the last opportunity as they lawmakers will have to question her as secretary of state. i hope instead of looking back and saying, what did you know, why didn't you talk about the video, i hope instead they focus forward which is why have you not responded. why haven't the responded after these attacks. we know that ten years ago, in the late 1989 and embassies were bombed, 2000, u.s.s. cole was bombed, we beefed up security and changed the rules of engagement but we never went after al-qaeda. what happened as a result, bin laden said, let's go get them again. my concern and i hope these lawmakers and secretary clinton, why has the united states not gotten

immediately following what happened in benghazi and trying to explain that on behalf of the administration. when she went up to capitol hill to meet with lawmakers the visits backfired. they raised a lot of questions and she was there to try to answer them and try to assuage concerns, that was true with senator susan hollins of maine, a republican but a moderate and that was seen as very troubling in all of this process. some critic also say, don, that without the nomination, she was left twisting in the wind but there's also this sense that president obama has a whole lot on his plate. he's obviously involved in this fight over the striking a deal on the fiscal cliff, and then going into next year, a lot of goals obviously to follow on that entitlement reform, spending cuts, tax reform and don't forget immigration reform is also a priority, so i think there was a sense that do you really spend all of this political capital on this fight when there's so many other things to do. >> and so she referenced that as well in her letter that she put out yesterday. alyse, you cover the state depart
